Introspection
2021
Experiential pathway through the Lowcountry
Faculty Choice Award 2021
The Coastal Discovery Museum creates a civic space for visitors to amplify ecology and history through introspection. Our proposal utilizes path and movement to achieve an experience that allows users to reflect within. The circulation forms the main corridor of the museum that alters the spatial and visual experience through the building. The path also shifts perspective as it moves vertically and turns in on itself at specific points so guests can see where they will go and reflect on where they have been. The CDM connects with the natural ecology of Hilton Head Island through materiality and outdoor programs that focus on the environment of the site. Sourcing materials like tabby concrete and wood localizes the museum and integrates with the site. The outdoor education pavilions, amphitheater, and tree walk allow visitors to interact with nature directly. The CDM fosters education and empathy in an environment that is authentic to the location it inhabits.
